You forget simple elemental things in the hustle and bustle of this world.
I remember a time with no email and no cell phone. I sent my first email when I was a freshman in college. I bought a cell phone in 2001. I had a calmer life before those things. A life full of imagination. I’m coming back to that. No social networking. One email address. I can’t let go entirely, but I have more room for absorption and creation. Reading, writing, music, taking pictures and cooking. These things make me happy.
I was in the basement and found a cookbook by an author I had never encountered before. Her name is Elena Zelayeta. The book was Elena’s Favorite Foods California Style. The ingredient lists and recipes were very accessible. (That meant not going to the grocery store for many of them.)
I made Golden Orange Bread. I substituted lemon zest for orange. It was a tangy snacky wonder. Even more wonderful with raspberry jam.
Bread & jam, jam & bread. Simple, delicious and almost forgotten.
